PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR

eLISA kALLIONIEMI, pHd

(How to pronounce my name: https://namedrop.io/elisakallioniemi)

Elisa Kallioniemi, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Director of the Brain Stimulation Lab at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Professor Kallioniemi is a neural engineer and a brain stimulation scientist. In her research, she uses brain stimulation to 1) develop neuroscientific methods to study the brain and 2) therapeutic approaches for neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Professor Kallioniemi received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering in Finland. She obtained her Ph.D. in Applied Physics (medical physics) from the University of Eastern Finland. Alongside her Ph.D., she also undertook practical clinical training in medical physics (in radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, clinical physiology, diagnostic radiology, and clinical neurophysiology). This program was designed to provide interdisciplinary training for engineers to enable them to improve and develop clinical methods and treatments. Before joining NJIT, Professor Kallioniemi was a postdoctoral researcher first in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford Medicine, followed by a postdoctoral position in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Professor Kallioniemi has lived, studied or worked in Finland, Germany, the UK, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, Brazil and the US. In addition to academia, she has worked in industry and hospital environment.

Graduate Students

Negar Namdar, BS

 Major: Biomedical engineering

I am a Ph.D. student in Professor Kallioniemi’s lab at NJIT, where my research interests lie in brain stimulation and its therapeutic effects. I have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Beheshti University, and I am passionate about learning how our nervous system works. I am particularly interested in discovering the untouched areas of our brain and finding ways to manipulate them to improve the quality of life for people. I am excited to be a part of Dr. Kallioniemi’s lab and contribute to the brain stimulation research field.

Kutluhan Mahmat, MS

major: Biomedical engineering

Kutluhan Mahmat is a Ph.D. student in Kallioniemi Brain Stimulation Lab at the NJIT BME. Kutluhan obtained his bachelor’s degree from Kocaeli University (KOU) Biomedical Engineering Department and his master’s degree from Boğaziçi University (BOUN) Institute of Biomedical Engineering in Turkiye. His previous research at BOUN BME focused on the impact of vibrotactile stimulation on the human primary somatosensory (S1) cortex analyzing somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs). In Prof. Dr. Kallioniemi’s Lab, his research interests are focused on discovering neurological biomarkers for psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Samiha Tabassum Khan, MS

major: biomedical engineering

I am a PhD student in Kallioniemi Brain Stimulation Lab at NJIT. Previously I had obtained BS in Electrical & Electronic Engineering degree from Ahsanullah University of Science & Technology, Bangladesh. Later I earned the MS in Biomedical Engineering degree from the University of Memphis, TN. During my master’s, the concept of brain stimulation and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) aligned with my research interest as a former undergraduate student of Electrical Engineering. My master’s research was focused on the effect of TMS at the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) region of the brain to treat depression. At Dr. Kallioniemi’s lab, I would like to study and understand more on how the practical application of TMS coils can impact the treatment of depression and other neurological disorders.
